Favorite roles include Garland Wright\u2019s production of <em>The Misanthrope<\/em> (Alceste), the American premiere of David Hare and Howard Brenton\u2019s <em>Pravda<\/em> (Lambert LeRoux) directed by Robert Falls, the world premiere of <em>The Film Society<\/em> (Jonathan Balton) by Jon Robin Baitz and title roles in <em>Hamlet, Peer Gynt, <\/em>and <em>Arturo Ui. <\/em>New York credits include <em>Wrong Mountain<\/em> (Tony nomination), <em>Talking Heads<\/em> (Obie and Outer Critics Circle Award), <em>La Cage aux Folles<\/em> (2004 revival), and for Lincoln Center <em>The Invention of Love<\/em> and <em>The<\/em><em> Frogs<\/em>. In 1971 he toured with Katharine Hepburn in <em>Coco<\/em> and toured again in 1982 as Salieri in <em>Amadeus,<\/em> which he also played on Broadway.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>Recent stage work includes the Classic Stage Company\u2019s revival of <em>The Cherry Orchard,<\/em> in which he played Gaev opposite Dianne Wiest and John Turturro. In 2011, he starred in A.R. Gurney\u2019s <em>Black Tie<\/em> at Primary Stages. He has played the title role in <em>King Lear<\/em> for the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, Kreon in <em>Medea<\/em> opposite Annette Bening for the U.C.L.A International Theatre Festival, and with the New York Philharmonic in a concert reading of Stravinsky\u2019s \u201cL\u2019Histoire du Soldat\u201d with Alec Baldwin. He spent six seasons as Niles the Butler on \u201cThe Nanny\u201d and has had numerous guest roles on TV, most notably as Professor Moriarty on \u201cStar Trek: The Next Generation\u201d. Films include <em>The Prestige,<\/em> Sydney Pollack\u2019s <em>Havana<\/em> and <em>The Hunt for Red October. <\/em><\/p>","website":"","alt":null}
